Recently, while searching the Internet for different articles, I came across several advertisements for language courses. Having fueled my curiosity, I thought about the benefits of learning a new language.

Learning a new language: How does the human brain work?
The second language is always easier. And the third is even fun!

To begin with, the human brain being divided into two hemispheres has a hemisphere for mathematics and one for languages. Nobody has the two of them exactly equal, so some people are good at Maths, and others quickly learn new words, phrases, poems, theatre or film parts.
However, if you can do sums, that does not mean you cannot learn foreign languages — because the brain develops. The more you make it work, the more it is capable of working.
You may experience difficulties, but being motivated — you learn, and learning becomes more comfortable the more you study.
It follows that having acquired the skills and knowledge to understand, speak, read and write one language, it is less difficult to study another one. And the third is fun!

Second, knowing more than one language improves the executive function of the brain, which controls attention. Through it, people can solve problems, make plans, ignore distractions, and hold information in memory.

It happens while studying languages, too — and gets faster the more you learn. This process sharpens the mind and wards off the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Third, knowing a language means that you can get acquainted with people speaking it, strange habits, culture, traditions, religions, etc. Well, I must warn you, that does not automatically mean you know everything about them!
The other day I heard a story about a group of famous male musicians and showmen. On their first visit to London, they asked the man allowed to entertain the foreign guests of the hotel where to eat.
Knowing that the English were too polite, they decided not to ask for a restaurant straightforward. The exact words were: “Please, Sir, could you possibly recommend a place for eight men to have dinner?” Needless to say, when they got out of the taxis at the address given, they found themselves in the company of ill-reputed women!
To finish, I would like to ponder on the fact that nowadays there are many language courses with promising instant results. That I can do better: just learn “hamburger”, “beer”, “paycheck” in as many languages as you can, and go wherever you want. That’s all! Or is it?
If you think about it, how long does it take for a child to speak her native language? Much more than a month or eight weeks. To learn a language, it takes patience, desire and determination.
I encourage you to look for these strengths in yourself! Then you will see how easy it is learning a new language, just like a child who plays while learning and babbles until she says the word correctly. From there on, you can learn what you want!

Lo que quiere decir que habiendo adquirido las habilidades y el conocimiento para comprender, hablar, leer y escribir un idioma, es más fácil aprender otro. ¡Y el tercero ya es hasta divertido!

En segundo lugar, conocer más de un idioma mejora la función ejecutiva del cerebro que controla la atención. A través de ella las personas pueden resolver problemas, hacer planes, ignorar distracciones, mantener información en la memoria.
Por ejemplo, mientras cocinas sigues una secuencia de ciertas actividades: cortar, remover, mezclar alimentos, encender y apagar electrodomésticos, etc. Incluso cuando tienes la receta delante tuya, aún realizas algunas actividades pregrabadas de forma automática en tu cerebro.
También ocurre mientras estudias idiomas y cada vez aprendes más rápido. Este proceso agudiza la mente y evita los síntomas de la enfermedad de Alzheimer o la demencia.
Un idioma abre la puerta a mundos nuevos
En tercer lugar, conocer un idioma significa que puedes conocer a personas que lo hablan, hábitos extraños, cultura, tradiciones, religiones, etc. Bueno, debo advertirte, ¡eso no significa automáticamente que sepas todo sobre ellos!
El otro día escuché una historia sobre un grupo de músicos famosos que, en su primera visita a Londres, le pidieron al hombre autorizado para entretener a los invitados extranjeros del hotel dónde comer.
Sabiendo que los ingleses eran demasiado educados, decidieron no pedir la recomendación de un restaurante al grano. Para acabar me gustaría reflexionar sobre que hoy en día hay muchos cursos de idiomas con resultados instantáneos prometedores. Esto lo puedo hacer mejor: simplemente aprende “hamburger”, “beer”, “paycheck” en todos los idiomas que puedas, y ve adonde quieras. ¡Y listo! ¿Verdad?
Si lo piensas, ¿cuánto tarda un niño en hablar su idioma natal? Mucho más que un mes u 8 semanas. Para aprender un idioma hace falta paciencia, ganas y determinación.
¡Te animo a que busques estos puntos fuertes en ti! Verás lo fácil que te va a resultar aprender un idioma. Igual que un niño que juega mientras aprende y balbucea hasta que dice la palabra correctamente. A partir de allí, ¡eres capaz de aprender lo que quieras!
